A probe has begun into the attempted smuggling of EUR 10m ($11.61) of cocaine into Ireland on a Peter Dohle boxship.

The Irish Mirror said 133kg of drugs were found in a container of fruit on the 3,947-teu Polar Chile (built 2018) last week in Costa Rica.

The vessel arrived in Cork on Wednesday, where police are assisting in the investigation.

An Irish police spokesperson said a probe "with a significant international dimension" is taking place following the seizure at Moin Port in Limon, Costa Rica, on 14 August.

Peter Dohle has been contacted for comment.
