The Chinese head of Cosco Shipping Lines in Pakistan has been shot dead in Karachi.
Chen Zhu, 45, was killed by a bullet to the head as at least 10 shots were fired into his car on Monday.
Reuters cited police as saying it appeared to be a targeted attack.
In December, China had warned its citizens in Pakistan of plans for attacks on Chinese targets there.
The First Post daily said Zhu was the managing director of the company.
“The incident appears to be targeted attack, (it) doesn’t look like a mugging,” Azad Khan, deputy inspector general of Karachi’s south zone, told Reuters.
A company spokeswoman in China said the cause of the incident was unclear. There had been no impact on operations.
She added: “The company has taken steps, first to ensure the safety of our staff overseas; secondly to inform the family so that they can go and make funeral arrangements; and thirdly we immediately contacted the local consulate and embassy to get their assistance.”
Hospital officials said Zhu was admitted in a critical condition, but later died.
