Global Ship Lease (GSL) has buttoned down a new hire for one boxship while prolonging the charter on another.

The Ian Webber-led boxship owner entered into a time charter of seven months to 10 months with CMA CGM subsidiary ANL for the 2,207-teu GSL Keta (built 2003).

The new charter, beginning on or around 20 November, is at $8,450 per day, up from $7,800 under a previous one-year fix to CMA-CGM that began September 2017, according to Clarksons.

Average daily time charter rates are hovering around $9,500.

GSL has also exercised options to extend charter on the 2,207-teu Marie Delmas and Kumasi (both built 2002) to CMA CGM through 2019 at $9,800 per day with options to hire through 2020.

“Our success entering into this new charter at a higher rate highlights the firming fundamentals for mid-size and smaller containerships," chief executive Webber said.

GSL has 19 vessels with total capacity of 85,136 teu.
