Greek bulker owner Gourdomichalis Maritime has sold one of its newest vessels.

European shipbrokers said the company has sold the 56,000-dwt Kavo Platanos (built 2011) to a Chinese buyer for $9.4m, which is slightly more than expected.

The vessel has been in the company’s fleet since it was ordered at CSC Jingling in June 2009. It is due for special survey next month.

Gourdomichalis did not respond to requests for comment. The Greek shipowner is listed with six bulkers with an average age of 12 years. The fleet is divided between supramaxes and panamaxes.

In January, the company bought its most modern bulker, the 58,000-dwt Easter N (built 2013), for $15m from Japanese interests. This vessel, renamed Kavo Perdika, is now likely worth more than $13m.

Its last sale took place in July of last year. That's when the company sold a much older vessel, the 76,000-dwt Kavo Manali (built 2004), to compatriot shipowner Niriis Shipping for $8.7m.

Gourdomichalis Maritime is headed by Theodore Triphyllis and was set up in 1968 by Stathis Gourdomichalis, a former president of the Union of Greek Shipowners. He died in 2006.

For more than 30 years, the company has been putting the prefix “Kavo”, the Greek term for “cape”, in its ships’ names.
