A Danish general cargoship will be assessed for damage after grounding twice trying to leave port.

Danish media said the 3,000-dwt Rix Amethyst (built 1999) first got into difficulty on Monday as it left Rudkoping.

The vessel had arrived on Sunday before loading 2,800 tonnes of grain destined for the German beer industry in Bremen.

But as the Rix Amethyst left port, the Cyprus-flagged vessel ended up grounding in waters off the North Basin at the port.

The vessel could not free itself, so a tug was brought in.

Port captain Kim Rasmussen told the Fyens newspaper that the Rix Amethyst took an hour and a half to refloat the ship.

The vessel tore loose a buoy during these manoeuvres.

But the ship was soon in trouble again, grounding a few ship lengths further north near the marina.

After half an hour it was freed under its own power.

"We do not know if it has damaged the bottom. We are waiting until it is clarified," said Ronnie Holstrom, a director at operator Baltic Shipping Company, to the Fyns Amts Avis newspaper.

The company has not responded to TradeWinds' request for further information.

The vessel is classed by RINA and has a clean port state control inspection record going back to 2011.

AIS data showed it at anchor in Bremerhaven on Wednesday.
