A Hyundai Glovis car carrier has suffered significant cargo damage after being caught in a storm in the English Channel earlier this week.

Local sources told TradeWinds they witnessed a large number of badly damaged high-end and heavy vehicles being unloaded from the 6,712-ceu Glovis Captain (built 2017) at the UK port of Southampton, where it is moored.

Witnesses said a forklift had been deployed to remove the vehicles.

It appears the vessel lost some of its lashings during a storm in the English Channel, which resulted in a cargo shift and damage to its cargo of cars and industrial vehicles.

Minor hull damage

It is understood the car carrier suffered minor damage to its hull, although the vessel and crew are safe. There is no pollution and the ship is unlikely to require dry-docking.

The Glovis Captain had earlier called at Bremerhaven then Antwerp before calling on Southampton, according to AIS records. The Glovis Captain's protection and indemnity insurer is Steamship Mutual.

It is unclear at this stage how much cargo has been damaged. However, the incident looks like adding up to another costly cargo insurance claim for the South Korean operator.

Just two months ago, Hyundai Glovis’ 7,700-ceu car carrier Golden Ray (built 2017) capsized at the US port of Brunswick writing off the ship and its entire cargo of 4,000 cars. The accident is still under investigation.

Hyundai Glovis has been contacted for comment.
