Diana Shipping has secured an improved daily rate for one of its panamaxes as the Baltic Dry Index (BDI) continues to rise.

The Greek bulker owner has chartered out the 73,691-dwt Calipso (built 2005) to Transgrain for $9,000 a day.

Transgrain has hired the vessel for 11 to 14 months, starting from 14 March.

Under its previous charter, Calipso was earning $6,000 per day from Windrose SPS Shipping and Trading.

As TradeWinds reported yesterday, Diana won a 11 to 13-month period contract for the 206,040-dwt Philadelphia (built 2012) from Koch Shipping.

The BDI moved above the 1,000 mark for the first time this year and kept improving today as it rose from 1,033 to 1,045.

The capesize index was up from 1,556 to 1,578 while the index for panamaxes gained 26 points at 1,220.
