A seafarer has been found dead on a cargo ship owned by UK-based Navalmar at the Dhamra port, east India.

The captain and crew of the 50,655-dwt Bedford Castle (built 1998) spotted the body of their colleague near his cabin on Sunday, the New Indian Express reported.

A local police official told the New Indian Express that the Sri Lankan seafarer is suspected to have died of cardiac arrest.

He was sent for post-mortem examination and the autopsy report is still expected.

Navalmar’s ship was loading iron ore to be shipped to China.

It was carrying 23 crew members and is likely to continue its voyage in the following days.

According to vessel tracking websites, the Bedford Castle is still anchored off India.

Comment has been sought from the London-based owner of the vessel.
