A fire on board a Pemex controlled tanker in the Gulf of Mexico has been extinguished, according to the Mexican oil company.

Thirty one seafarers escaped unharmed after the blaze broke out on the 40,200-dwt Burgos (built 2005) on Saturday.

Reports from the Associated Press say experts have now begun to investigate the cause of the fire, which occurred in two of the ship’s tanks.

Pemex has released pictures from a survey flight over the tanker after fire fighters put out the flames yesterday.

Protective booms were placed around the Burgos to restrict any pollution and Pemex says there is now no risk of fuel spilling from the double-hulled vessel.

A sheen on the water inside the booms was attributed to the foam used to douse the flames.

Over 100 people from navy and the port administration fought the fire with salvors now contracted to review the situation, AP said.

The tanker was en route from Coatzacoalcos to Veracruz, carrying gasoline and diesel,  when the incident occurred.
