World Fuel Services has requested an order to arrest a bulker in New Orleans over a bunkers bill that has allegedly gone unpaid by Denmar Chartering and Trading for four years.

The US fuel supplier filed a lawsuit in a federal court targeting the 56,700-dwt AS Varesia (built 2011), which is owned by Germany's Ahrenkiel Steamship.

World Fuel alleges that it sold Denmar nearly 1,000 tonnes of bunkers for the ship in Singapore. The fuel was delivered by physical supplier Seven Seas Oil Trading in November 2012.

Never paid

But Hamburg-based Denmar has never paid the more than $612,000 bill, wrote John Fay, the Fay Nelson & Fay lawyer representing World Fuel in the case.

Interest brings the company's total claim to $1.24m.

There are no allegations against Ahrenkiel, but US law sometimes allows bunkers suppliers to arrest a ship over unpaid fuel bills even when they involve its former charterer.

Efforts to reach Ahrenkiel and Denmar were not immediately successful.

Vessel tracking data show that the AS Varesia remains at anchor in New Orleans.
