GasLog is looking to convert one of its LNG carriers to a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU)

Keppel Shipyard is ordering the kit required for the conversion of a GasLog or GasLog Partners-owned LNG carrier to FSRU service, the Paul Wogan-led company said in a statement.

The conversion involves the ordering of pumps, vaporisers, heat exchangers and low duty compressors. GasLog said it will take approximately 12 months to deliver the conversion kit at a total cost of around $16m.

Ordering the parts reduces the time necessary to convert an LNG carrier from between 18 to 20 months to 6 to 8 months once the parts are delivered, GasLog added. Keppel has carried out 3 successful conversion projects in the past.

GasLog did not say whether it has a vessel in mind for a conversion or whether it has a particular charter for an FSRU. But ordering the conversion kit puts it "in a position to offer a fast track solution for FSRU projects in the future."

"GasLog's success in developing both its FSRU capability and its industry relationships has allowed the early ordering," Wogan said in a statement. "This is a reflection of the progress we are making with a number of different projects around the world."
