TradeWinds reported in January a letter of intent had been signed for 84,000-cbm ships at the yard.

Sources said HHI beat shipbuilding rivals Kawasaki Heavy Industries and Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding to the business.

KOTC also tendered for a lone VLCC newbuilding. Shipbuilding insiders said this order was expected to go to a Chinese yard, and BohaiShipbuilding is reported to have clinched the deal.
