NYK is the owner behind Samsung Heavy Industries' latest LNG carrier order.

The Japanese giant said it had contracted the KRW 200bn ($180m) newbuilding backed by a seven-year charter to French energy major Total Gas & Power Chartering.

There is an optional charter extension period of 12 months.

The 174,000-cbm ship is due in 2021.

Samsung had announced a deal for the ship on Monday, but did not reveal the owner.

The LNG carrier will be equipped with a WinGD-made dual-fuel slow-speed diesel engine that has "superior fuel-consumption efficiency and can operate on marine gas oil or boil-off gas stored in the cargo tank," NYK said.

"In addition, the new carrier will realise superior efficiency and economical LNG transportation through use of a re-liquefaction system that can use surplus boil-off gas effectively."

NYK had been tipped as the owner by industry sources cited by TradeWinds.

This year, Samsung has secured newbuilding orders to build a total 40 ships worth an estimated $4.7bn.

Samsung has previously said that it expects close to 200 LNG carriers to be ordered over the next five years, quoting recent analysis by Clarksons.

This will include 37 vessels this year due to strong spot freight rates, demand for LNG power generation, and increased use of marine fuel.
