Three Canadians have been charged with drug smuggling after cocaine was found hidden in an NSC boxship last month.

The seizure was made from the 2,872-teu Arica (built 2007) at the port of Halifax.

The Chronicle Herald reported that Matthew Ryan Lambert, 34, Dangis Seinauskas, 46, and Darcy Peter Bailey, 46, made a brief court appearance this week, but their bail hearings were adjourned.

Divers had inspected the vessel on 9 June and found about 150kg of cocaine wrapped in plastic and concealed in the ship’s sea chest, a recess on the bottom of the hull through which it draws in sea water.

Two suspects allegedly had diving equipment with them when they were arrested near the container terminal. The third man was at a hotel.

NSC has been contacted for comment.
