A new charter promoting gender diversity will be launched by a taskforce created by Maritime UK.
The Women in Maritime pledge seeks to resolve gender inequality in global seafaring, with its taskforce addressing fairness, equality and inclusion in the sector.
"The charter creates a framework to challenge companies to make progress on diversity, and will be supported by a suite of ‘toolkits’ or resources to help companies realise those targets," Maritime UK said.
Events to formally launch the charter will be held in London, Liverpool and Southampton across Maritime UK Week starting 10 September.
Almost 20 organisations have signed the charter, including Carnival UK, the Port of London Authority, British Ports Association and Maritime London UK Chamber of Shipping.
Assessing progress
Companies joining the Women in Maritime Charter must adhere to an action plan that sets out goals for participants.
Companies will select a member of senior management to implement the plan and conduct a survey on workplace culture.
Participants will assess their own performances against the plan online, to be published in a joint industry-government report.
"We think we’ve struck the right balance between realism and challenge, with the appropriate plan in place to support companies to excel on gender diversity," said Sue Terpilowski, chair of the taskforce
