South Korea is planning a fund to boost the domestic cruiseship industry.

At least KRW 100bn ($83.3m) will be on offer to help bring in overseas tourists, oceans and fisheries minister Kim Young-suk said.

One aim is to help start-up Korea Cruise Line buy a ship costing KRW 200bn.

The company was launched in late 2015, but has not yet been able to begin full operations.

The fund will be financed by the private sector, with the government putting in 10%.

"According to experts, the number of cruise passengers could be more than 100,000 people if a cruiseship of between 50,000 tons and 70,000 tons is placed in service," Kim told the Yonhap news agency.
