Five Polish sailors abducted in Nigeria last week are fine and have contacted their families at home.

The Polish ministry of foreign affairs has issued a brief announcement saying that the seafarers told their relatives they are safe and sound.

It did not provide any other details, saying it was out of concern for the sailors' lives and health.

The five men were on the 9,597-dwt Szafir (built 1992) when they were kidnapped by pirates off the Nigerian coast on Friday.

The ship’s captain and three officers were among those abducted.

Szafir, operated by Euroafrica Shipping Lines, was en route from Belgium to Nigeria.

It was carrying metal and other items, according to Reuters.

The remaining 11 sailors on the vessel managed to avoid abduction by locking themselves inside the engine room.
