Pirate activity in Somalia could rise again as a result of worsening political conditions in the Horn of Africa, a report claims.

Certain regions suitable for the lengthy stay of a hijacked vessel are being recreated in Somalia’s Galmdung province, Bloomberg said.

IHS told the wire that deteriorating political conditions in the country will enable fully equipped pirates to resume their operations.

A week ago, powerful Somali pirate Mohamed Osman Mohamud gave himself up to authorities along with hundreds of his men.

No attacks have been reported in the region since last year.

Two incidents took place the year before, according to the European Union Naval Force.

At times of peak pirate activity, there were hundreds of attacks taking place every year off Somalia.
