A Briese Schiffahrts-operated multi-purpose (MPP) vessel was attacked off the coast of Nigeria with eight crew members kidnapped, the Russian Embassy in Nigeria reported on its official Twitter account.
The 6,500-dwt BBC Caribbean (built 2008) was attacked Sunday. Pirates kidnapped seven Russians and one Ukrainian. The embassy has asked Nigerian authorities to assist in locating the abducted people, it said late on Tuesday.
"The armed pirates approached (the vessel) in a boat, captured the crew and left on the boat at the direction of the Nigerian shores," said Briese Schiffahrts director Pavel Fedulov in a statement to Russian media.
No firearms were used during the attack, he added. No information was immediately available with regard to protection and indemnity coverage or the hull insurer.
