Malaysia has revealed its intention to have the eight hijackers of the tanker Orkim Harmony tried in the country.
The Malaysian prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said the extradition request was handed over to his Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Xuan Phuc during a bilateral meeting.
Hijackers attacked the 7,301-dwt ship last June, before getting arrested in Vietnamese waters, near Tho Chu Island.
After their detention, there were reports that the assailants confessed to the crime.
It is believed that the Orkim Harmony was carrying around 6,000 tonnes of RON 95 fuel worth MYR 21m ($5.5m) at the time of the attack.
Malaysia’s prime minister added that the country’s extradition request would be looked into by Vietnamese authorities.
