Suspected pirates have killed three Nigerian soldiers during an attack at a military checkpoint.
The Vanguard newspaper reports that the attack took place in Foropa and it is believed that the assailants were looking to steal arms and ammunition.
Piracy activity in Nigeria seems to be heating up as Vanguard also reports that the Nigerian navy averted attacks on three vessels lat week.
The ships are believed to be the 44,774-dwt chemical tanker Moxon (built 1997), owned by Union Maritime, the Altomare-owned 46,851-dwt product carrier African Beauty (built 1993) and the 33,037-dwt bulker Madona (built 1982).
Equasis describes the latter vessel as a “total loss” on its website.
