A platform supply ship (PSV) reportedly abandoned in Mexico has capsized and sunk.

The 2,200-dwt Caballo Eclipse (built 1985), owned by restructuring domestic owner Oceanografia, went down off Carmelite island on 27 January in a storm, local media reported.

La Jornada Maya cited the country's maritime authority as saying that it had developed a hull crack in December.

This got wider by about 1 metre this month, causing water ingress.

It is partially submerged in a listing position.

In 2015 a Mexican judge permitted the offshore vessel operator to return to regular operations nearly 10 months after descending into insolvency proceedings amid a fraud scandal.

Oceanografia had entered into court restructuring in July of that year.

Mexico’s government had already taken over control of the company in February 2014.

This month, a federal judge approved for the third time an agreement to restructure its debt.
