A helicopter has had to rescue five people from a Canadian ferry that ran out of fuel off Newfoundland.

The 400-gt passenger/general cargo Norcon Galatea (built 1968) got into difficulty on Sunday near Brunette Island, CBC reported.

The Joint Rescue Co-ordinate Centre in Halifax said the vessel was adrift after its bunkers ran out.

A notice from the Canadian Coast Guard early on Monday morning advised caution in the area, as the vessel had been abandoned and was considered not under command.

The vessel is operated by Norcon Marine Services.
