A Cosco Shipping Lines containership has suffered a fire en route to Singapore.

German line Hapag-Lloyd, which has 32 teu on the vessel, said in a note to customers that dense smoke was detected in hold number four of the 9,400-teu Cosco Shipping Thames (built 2017) on 23 August.

The crew activated the fire extinguisher system and brought the blaze under control.

"It is unclear at this time whether cargo has been affected," Hapag-Lloyd said. "We very much regret any inconvenience caused, which in this case is beyond our control."

A spokesman for Hapag-Lloyd told TradeWinds that Cosco was believed to be considering taking a few days to refill CO2 cylinders at Singapore, and will then most probably omit the Hong Kong eastbound call.

Further information has been sought from Cosco in Singapore.

The vessel operates on the Asia to east coast South America (ASE) service.

AIS data shows it moored in Singapore, having arrived on 27 August.
