All 13 crew have been safely rescued from a listing general cargoship off Africa.

The 8,900-dwt Koza (built 2004) started taking on water and sent a distress signal 100 miles south of Freetown, Sierra Leone, on 7 December, the Wyborcza website said.

The master reported a leak in the engine room and the crew prepared to abandon ship.

Polish operator Euroafrica's 17,300-dwt cargoship ESL Europa (built 2007) was first at the scene and took 11 crew on board.

The master and the chief officer were rescued by Peter Dohle's 63,000-dwt bulker TD Tokyo (built 2017).

A reefer was also involved in the rescue.

Pictures showed Koza listing to port and down by the stern.

Equasis lists the manager as Burtrans of Turkey, which has been contacted for further details.

The search and rescue was coordinated by Norwegian authorities in Stavanger.

The rescued crew will be dropped in Freetown.
