Eight seafarers have been saved from a cargoship that got into difficulty off Vietnam.

Local reports said the men from the 1,900-dwt Binh Nguyen 86 (built 2008) were picked up by the 610-teu boxship Biendong Freighter (built 2006) on Friday.

The bigger ship had been diverted by rescue authorities.

It was not clear what had happened to the general cargo vessel, operated by Hoa Phuong Shipping.

But it had been abandoned by the crew, who were found on life rafts.

The container vessel is operated by Bien Dong Shipping.
