One crewman has died following a fire on an MR tanker off India.
The blaze broke out on the 46,000-dwt Genessa (built 2000) off Kandla on Wednesday, local media said.
All 26 crew were rescued, but one man later died in hospital from burns. Another seafarer was also severely injured, according to Abhishek Matiman, a spokesperson for Gujarat's defence ministry .
“The fire has been doused but smoke is still coming out from hot spots. So, the operation is still on to cool down hot spots to prevent any mishap or further damage,” he told the Hindustan Times.
“Hot spots' temperature brought down to 40 and 25 degrees Celsius on port/starboard side respectively. Boundary cooling is in progress."
Three Indian Coast Guard (ICG) vessels and nine tugs continued to douse the flames on Thursday. The fire is believed to have started in the crew area.
No pollution has been reported, according to Gujarat's defence ministry.
The Seven Islands Shipping vessel is anchored about 15 miles off Deendayal port.
It is carrying 30,000 tonnes of diesel.
The fire comes nearly two weeks after NITC's suezmax Sanchi burned and sank off China with the loss of all 32 crew, following a collision.
