An investigation has begun after a seafarer was killed in an accident on a Greek cargoship in the UK.

Firefighters and an ambulance were sent to the 2,500-dwt SMN Explorer (built 1996) at King's Lynn on 1 February.

The Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) told the Eastern Daily Press: “We are aware of an accident on board a vessel. We have sent a team to investigate the fatality."

The East of England Ambulance Trust said it was called to a traumatic injury on the vessel. The crewman died at the scene.

The commercial manager of the vessel's charterer Scotline, Jon Millatt, told TradeWinds the incident is being investigated by the shipowner and the authorities, who will release a statement once the full facts have been understood.

He added Scotline does not own or technically manage the vessel and only has it on time charter.

"Our thoughts and deepest sympathies go out to the family of the crew member involved," he added.

The owner is listed as Explorer Ships, with Sky Mare Navigation of Greece the manager.

The ship was berthed in Alexandra Dock at the time.
