The crew of a CSL bulker was involved in a rescue operation on Lake Ontario that saved a man's life, while the second man overboard died.

The crew of the 36,417-dwt CSL Welland (built 2014) noticed "objects floating in the water" while crossing the lake off Olcott, New York, on 25 August, the Canadian owner said.

Capt Wilson Walters, the ship's master, notified the US Coast Guard, activated the ship's alarm and initiated a rescue upon realising that two people were in the water.

“We commend Captain Wilson Walters and his crew for this act of heroism that is a true testament to the professionalism, teamwork and courage of the crew,” CSL chief executive Louis Martel said.

A small fishing boat in the area was ordered to help rescue one individual, who was put on the ship and given first aid to prevent shock and keep warm, dry and hydrated.

The crew launched the rescue boat to save the second person, who appeared unconscious and was moved to the fishing vessel for CPR until US and Canadian coast guards arrived.

The unconscious man was soon pronounced dead and transferred to a USCG cutter to be brought ashore.

The survivor was put aboard the fishing boat and also transferred to land.
