A blaze that broke out on Japanese owner Doun Kisen’s 58,600-dwt bulker Kouyou (built 2013) on Tuesday has been extinguished.
The blaze started in a cargo hold while the ship was loading a cargo of scrap in the Dutch port of Dordrecht.
According to the vessel's Singapore-based shipmanagers, Dutch fire-fighters attended to the vessel promptly and the blaze was extinguished within a few hours.
Oily residue on the scrap cargo is suspected to be the cause.
The vessel itself has reportedly suffered no significant damage from a fire.
The Dordrecht fire-fighters were not the only ones in the Netherlands called out to tackle a ship fire this week. On Monday fire-fighters in Harlingen attended to a cargo hold fire on Boomsma Shipping’s 8,400-dwt general cargo ship Marfaam (built 2011).
That fire was also extinguished quickly with no damage to the vessel reported.
