A Philippines ferry has had its passenger safety certificate suspended after a crash injured 58 people.

The 300-gt St Braquiel (built 1996) was in collision with a barge in Mactan channel on Saturday, the Sun Star reported.

The vessel is operated by 2Go's Supercat Fast Ferry Corp.

Maritime safety authority Marina said it also suspended the licence of ferry captain Reniero Maurin.

In addition, barge master Edgardo Binolirao and the craft itself had their permits temporarily removed.

In a press conference, Commodore John Manuel Alip of the Philippine Coast Guard Cebu said that St Braquiel, which had 90 passengers and came from Ormoc City, was bound for Pier 4, Cebu City.

Barge MTB SMC 8 was loaded with empty bottles of beer and came from Estancia, Iloilo City, bound for San Miguel Corp in Mandaue City.
