The use of heavy fuel oil (HFO) should be phased out in Arctic waters to secure food supply for the region's indigenous population, demanded a group representing Inuits
The Inuit Circumpolar Council, which represents the Inuit of Alaska, Canada, Greenland, and Chukotka, said it will advocate to “phase out heavy fuel oil in order to minimise impacts on marine mammals and fish and to prevent disruption of seasonal hunting, and for safety and environmental protection.”
The council's "Utqiagvik Declaration" made calls for the enforcement of the IMO Polar Code, under which ships are encouraged not to use or carry heavy fuel oil in the Arctic.
