Two badly injured crewmen have been airlifted from a drifting MOL boxship that was hit by a fire off Canada.

The blaze broke out in the engine room of the 6,350-teu MOL Prestige (built 2006) on Thursday afternoon, CBC reported.

The vessel is adrift 207 miles south-west of Haida Gwaii.

The men were taken by helicopter to hospital for medical care.

Rescue services tweeted that two coast guard vessels were also sent to the scene.

The crew of 23 managed to extinguish the blaze. Three others were injured.

The ship was en route from Vancouver to Tokyo.

MOL has brought in a Foss Maritime tug for a towage operation.

It was expected to arrive on site on Saturday morning.
