Norway headquartered shipmanager OSM Maritime Group is planning to re-launch a maritime training school in Mozambique as part of its commitment to the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC).
OSM has signed up to the corporate social responsibility UNGC programme promising to focus on Human Rights, Labour, Environmental Protection, and Anti-Corruption while also seeking to increase the numbers of female seafarers in its pool of 11,000 seafareres.
OSM chief executive Geir Sekkesaeter said the plan to re-launch the Mozambican Higher School of Nautical Sciences fitted with its UNGC goal to provide “quality education.”
“Through this MOU, OSM Africa will draw up a viability study for re-launching the school and transforming it into a centre of excellence for maritime training. We strongly believe that quality education is a cornerstone of developing a sustainable industry that rewards all stakeholders – in Mozambique and worldwide.
This kind of investment fits not just with our UNGC goals, but also with the OSM way of doing business,” Sekkesaeter said.
OSM is currently conducting a four month feasibility study into the project. Among its other UNGC initiatives it is conducting an internal and external campaign to raise awareness of employment opportunities for female crew. That will include highlighting existing success stories, and campaigning for greater inclusion and equality across the maritime industry.
