A seafarer on a containership managed by Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement (BSM) went missing in Greek waters earlier today.

TradeWinds has learnt that Greek authorities have launched a rescue operation with vessels and a helicopter having been deployed so far.

The 39-year-old seafarer went missing under unclear circumstances from the 1,740-teu Louisa Schulte (built 2008) off south Greece.

BSM confirmed that a search operation is underway and is being jointly conducted by the Greek authorities and the ship.

The ship manager added: "We will not be releasing any further details about the missing seafarer until next of kin have been informed. The emergency response team is assembled and all focus is on locating our colleague."

According to the Greek authorities the winds in the area are up to five on the Beaufort scale.
