Samsung Heavy Industries has secured a further LNG carrier order, the South Korean shipbuilder confirmed in a regulatory filing Monday.

The newbuilding deal is reportedly worth KRW 200bn ($180m) and will see the gas carrier handed over by early 2021.

Samsung declined to identify the identity of the counterparty only revealing that it was an “Asia-based” client.

However, TradeWinds recently reported that NYK Line was tipped to sign up to an LNG carrier newbuilding after winning time-charter business from Total.

Industry sources said the Japanese shipowner would place the contract with Samsung Heavy Industries for delivery in 2020 or 2021.

This year, Samsung has secured newbuilding orders to build a total 40 ships worth an estimated $4.7bn.

Samsung has previously said that it expects close to 200 LNG carriers to be ordered over the next five years, quoting recent analysis by Clarksons.

This will include 37 vessels this year due to strong spot freight rates, demand for LNG power generation, and increased use of marine fuel.
