Italian shipbuilding giant is one of two groups interested in investing in Croatia's troubled Uljanik Group.
Croatian economy minister Darko Horvat said it has a letter of intent from Fincantieri, while it is awaiting an answer from Ukraine's Smart Holding, tportal.hr reported.
Earlier this week, Croatian prime minister Andrej Plenkovic met the owner of Smart Holding, the yard and metals tycoon Vadim Novinski.
Uljanik, which has two yards, has been in increasing financial difficulty this year, with orders cancelled and workers going out on strike over unpaid wages.
It is building two cruiseships for Australia's Scenic Cruises, however, with the prospect of more to come, making it a good potential acquisition for cruise specialist Fincantieri.
