Three German shipyards have joined forces in an effort to increase capacity.

BREDO and Mutzelfeldwerft will be added to the German Dry Docks (GDD) umbrella from the start of February.

The main aim of the project is "to harmonise business segments with cross-site planning", with the yards each keeping their present brand names.

Guido Forsterling of GDD and BREDO’s Dick Harms will jointly manage the three locations.

Harms said: “Cross-site dock planning is a key element of our strategy. Each shipyard has had to reject orders in the past when its own docks were occupied.

“Together we are now able to offer a higher dock capacity and react directly to fluctuating workloads at the sites.”

According to Forsterling, the new alliance will help the yards strengthen their positions in the domestic and international markets.

GDD have five docks in Bremerhaven, with BREDO sporting four in the same region. Mutzelfeldwerft has a single dock in Cuxhaven.
