Dutch shipbuilder Royal IHC is laying off 425 workers in "persistently poor" markets.

The dredger specialist said it was “increasingly outsourcing production activities” to remain cost-efficient in the face of competition from eastern Europe and Asia.

The yard has entered into talks with its work council and trade associations about redundancies.

"Economic developments in the markets in which IHC operates continue to be extremely turbulent," it said.

"As in 2015, the oil price and increasing international competition in particular have led to a significantly lower order intake in the first nine months of 2016 than anticipated.”

It will maintain the yard in Krimpen as its main plant, with Kinderdijk maintained as a reserve.

Its executive board is also being reduced to two members, CEO Dave Vander Heyde and CFO Arie Vergunst.
