Norway's Rederiet Stenersen is poised to add two firm chemical tankers to its orderbook in China.

The company told TradeWinds it has signed contracts for 17,500-dwt ships at Taizhou Kouan, but the deal is not yet finalised, with the vessels on subjects.

It ordered two ships of the same size at the yard in 2015, but rejected two optional ships last year.

"The newbuildings are part of Stenersen's long term strategic plan of always maintaining a young, modern and competitive fleet," it said in 2016.

TradeWinds has reported that the first two chemical tankers had a price tag of $30m each.

The newbuildings are claimed to be the first tankers to feature hybrid-electric propulsion with energy storage solutions from WE Tech and Corvus.

The first was delivered in the summer and the second is due this month.

Stenersen has 16 other vessels in operation.
