Nasdaq-listed Lindblad Expeditions has opted for Norway's Ulstein Group for its new expedition cruiseship.

It has signed a deal to take delivery of a firm vessel in the first quarter of 2020, with an option for two additional units.

The Finansavisen daily reported the price for the ship at NOK 1.1bn ($134.6m).

The shipowner is promising the world's "foremost" expedition vessel, designed to venture into polar regions.

It will use the yard's X-Bow design to increase fuel efficiency while significantly improving guest comfort in rough seas.

Expanded fuel and water tanks provide for longer operations in remote areas.

"We are incredibly excited to be working with Ulstein and their brilliant team of engineers and designers on this state-of-the-art vessel as we continue expansion of our fleet. It is the next step in the long-term growth of the company, and will be the most extraordinary global expedition ship in the world on a multitude of levels," said CEO Sven Lindblad.

"The launch of this ship will mark the fiftieth anniversary year of the first-ever purpose-built expedition ship, Lindblad Explorer, which was built by my father, Lars-Eric Lindblad, and will set another important milestone in the company's commitment to deliver expedition travel at its best."

Lindblad also announced third quarter net profit of $9.44m, up from $7.44m in 2016.

Revenue grew to $85.48m against $70.74m a year ago.
