State-controlled General National Maritime Transport Co (GNMTC) is said to have sold a pair of 18-year-old aframaxes.

US brokers reported that the Libyan tanker owner has disposed of the 112,000-dwt Intisar and Ebn Batuta (both built 2002) for $10.5m each.

The ships have been sold to a Middle East-based buyer, the brokers said.

The company had put the Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries-built duo, plus the sistership El Gurdabia, on the sale and purchase market in December. H

There are no reports that the El Gurdabia has been sold.

The ships are estimated to have a scrap price of less than $7m each.

GNMTC did not react to requests for comment.

The company bought the two tankers from Teekay Corp for $68.5m each in February 2006.

Last December, GNMTC also asked for bids for its only bulker, 169,000-dwt Jabal Nafusa (built 2011). GNMTC bought this bulker as a newbuilding for $61m in a November 2010 resale deal.

A slightly larger capesize bulker of a similar age was reported sold at $23m this month.

GNMTC's vessel sale efforts were seen as part of a fleet renewal effort.

In a tender document on its website, GNMTC said last December that its sales are part of the first phase of its fleet development plan “in accordance with the policy of change”.

Bidders had until 26 January to access documentation on the four vessels.

GNMTC has 20 tankers that are on average 14 years old.

This story has been amended to remove reference to the Badr, which GNMTC still asserts is still managed by the company and owned by Libyan Navigator.
